Ukraine-NATO Council Meeting: Commitment to Support Ukraine and Strengthen Defense Capabilities

In a statement after the first meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, the Allies pledged to “remain steadfastly committed to further strengthening political and practical support for Ukraine.”

They also stated that they will “continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary.”

“We are increasing our connectivity with NATO,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said before the meeting, adding that Ukraine “actually has a NATO army in terms of technical capabilities, leadership approach and principles.”

During the council meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on the allies to support Ukraine with more concrete measures. He warned that Russia had built up a large stockpile of missiles before winter.

Stoltenberg said that Russia “is now militarily, politically and economically weaker”. At the same time, he called not to underestimate the Kremlin, stressing that Russia is carrying out new strikes on the energy infrastructure, “trying to leave Ukraine in the dark and cold.”

NATO and Ukraine already cooperate and decide as equals on a wide range of issues, including connectivity, energy security, innovation, cyber security and military resilience, the alliance’s statement said.

NATO countries will work to “help rebuild Ukraine’s security and defense sector and support Ukraine’s long-term deterrence and defense capabilities.” “As part of these efforts, we are developing a roadmap for Ukraine’s transition to full NATO connectivity,” the statement said.
