“We welcome the fact that Mr. Schönbach has resigned,” the Ukrainian diplomat said.
Melnyk added that Schönbach’s statement to a large extent called into question the authority and reliability of Germany, and not only for Ukraine.
The ambassador pointed out that his words “plunged the entire Ukrainian public into a deep shock”, noting that the incident reminded the citizens of Ukraine of the “condescending attitude” during the Nazi occupation of the country.
Why Germany refuses to supply weapons to Ukraine
Shortly after Schönbach’s statement, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned the German ambassador, Anka Feldhusen, who was also expressed “deep disappointment” because of Berlin’s position on not providing defense weapons to Kiev.
Schönbach then asked immediately relieve him of his post, German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht accepted his request. The department noted that the vice admiral’s statements do not reflect the official position of the ministry.
