Report: The identity of Yossi Shariel, commander of Unit 8200, the IDF’s intelligence gathering unit and one of the most secretive units in the world, was revealed today (Friday) in a “Guardian” report. According to the British newspaper, the unit’s commander published a book on Amazon – to which his personal Google account was attached. The article was published with the approval of the censor.

The “Guardian” claims that Shariel is the author of the book The Human Machine Team published on Amazon. They explained that due to an “embarrassing mistake” the book led to a Google account in Shariel’s name, “along with a unique ID card and links to the account’s maps and calendars.” The newspaper explained that the book dealt with the effect of artificial intelligence on the relationship between military personnel and machines.

An IDF spokesman stated that the book in question was published several years ago and the address mentioned in it is not used by the officer personally and has not been used in the past. However, the disclosure of the officer’s personal details is a mistake. The issue will be investigated to prevent the recurrence of similar cases in the future.

Unit 8200 is the central intelligence collection unit of the IDF’s Intelligence Division – and it collects intelligence, analyzes and processes it and finally distributes it to the warrior and political ranks. The commander of the unit is an officer at the rank of lieutenant colonel whose identity remains confidential during his service.
