UK exceeds 73,000 deaths

The UK has recorded 964 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours and 55,892 infections, the British Ministry of Health said today, which ordered the reactivation of a field hospital in London.

As of Wednesday, 981 new daily deaths from coronavirus had been recorded, more than double the number reported the day before, and 50,023 infections.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 73,512 infected deaths have been reported after diagnosis with the disease and 2,488,780 cases in the United Kingdom.

The growing influx of patients with the disease to hospitals has prompted the British Health Service (NHS) to announce the reactivation of the giant field hospital set up in an exhibition center in London in early April, during the first wave of the pandemic.

“London hospitals are under significant pressure due to the high rates of coronavirus infection,” justified an NHS spokesman.

Built with the support of the Army, it had an initial capacity of up to 4,000 beds, equivalent to ten conventional hospitals, but served relatively little, partly due to the lack of available professionals.

Other field hospitals, called Nightingale, named after a famous British nurse, have been established in the rest of the country and those in Manchester and Harrogate (northern England) and Bristol (southwest) are currently being used for patients without covid-19.

As of today, about 80% of the population in England is in confinement to try to halt the rapid spread of the virus, aggravated by a strain of SARS-Cov-2 considered more infectious.

Level 4, the highest of the current range of restrictions, recommends residents to stay at home, except to buy food, work, study or exercise, and determines the closure of most shops, including non-essential stores, bars and restaurants. , unless they sell out, cinemas, theaters and hotels.

The latest report from the General Health Directorate of England (Public Health England) published today indicates that covid-19 case rates continue to increase in all regions, notably London, which rose to 735.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the seven days until December 27th.

Eastern England had the second highest rate (551.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), followed by southeastern England (450.6 cases) and Yorkshire and Humber (northeast) had the lowest rate, 188.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants .

Education Minister Gavin Williamson announced on Wednesday a phased return to classes starting next week, keeping some schools closed in areas with a high level of infections.
