UFC: Jon Jones leaves his light heavyweight belt vacant to target heavyweights

Jon Jones announced Monday on his Twitter account that he was abandoning his light heavyweight champion’s belt.

“It’s officially up for grabs,” he wrote. It was an amazing adventure and I thank you for the competition, the UFC, but most importantly the fans. “

Jones then let it be known that negotiations with the mixed martial arts organization looked positive in order for him to climb one weight class and end up in the heavyweight.

“I just had a positive conversation with the UFC,” Jones said. It looks like there will be negotiations for my next heavyweight fight. Good news and the weight gain can begin. “

Jones and the UFC had been feuding over the past few months over this, as Jones wanted more pay to fight Francis Ngannou.

Since 2011, Jones has simply dominated the light heavyweight category with 14 championship fights and 11 belt defenses.

After losing the title in 2015 for being involved in a hit-and-run, he recovered his belt with a win against Daniel Cormier in 2017. The latter has just bowed out after his setback against Stipe Miocic at UFC 252.
