Ucayali: Missing persons and anti-drug teams still missing after river accident

Missing people and anti-drug equipment remain missing after the river accident that occurred on March 30, in the Ucayali region. In this regard, the Ministry of the Interior (Mininter) released a statement; However, it is striking that it does not cite the loss of equipment used against drug trafficking. That is to say, it is not mentioned that the police personnel who provide security, during the eradication efforts, have lost 16 assault rifles.

Among the personnel involved were members of the special project for the Control and Reduction of Coca Cultivation in Alto Huallaga (Corah), who carry out work to eradicate illegal coca leaf crops. This is an initiative implemented by the Ministry in the fight against drug trafficking.

“A situation of this type has never occurred before, let’s say in this context of eradication,” recalled the former Minister of the Interior, Rubén Vargas, in an interview for Inforegión. He noted that previously Shining Path attacks caused deaths among Corah personnel, but a fact linked to the sinking of boats is new.

The facts

This Saturday, March 30, during the Holy Week celebrations, on the Tamaya River, two boats carrying personnel from the Corah special project and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) collided. The river accident left two members of the Corah and a police officer missing. In addition, two members of the Mininter special program were injured; as well as two police officers. This is noted by the loss of the rifles.

The Ministry reported that actions have been carried out to recover the injured, as well as to search for the missing. Unfortunately, these are still missing. The injured are being treated at the PNP clinic in Pucallpa and at a private location.

Personnel from the Anti-Drug Directorate of the National Police of Peru (Dirandro) are carrying out actions to find the missing people, he added.

Minister must lead rescue actions

“I think it would be important for the Minister of the Interior to travel to Pucallpa to lead the search for the missing and I think it is also necessary for the Corah, the Anti-Drug Police, to know that eradication is an important action and that they have the support of the Government central,” Vargas emphasized.

The former Minister of the Interior made this statement because the accident occurred in Ucayali, a key area. “Without a doubt we are talking about the region and the area where the most growth of coca leaves has been reported in the last five years and, obviously, which corresponds to its eradication,” he considered.

Next, he highlighted the work carried out by the staff of the Corah special project. This carries out “absolutely important operations that go along the lines of preventing coca from becoming cocaine. Thanks to eradication actions, nearly 200 tons of cocaine are prevented from reaching international markets,” he highlighted.

Likewise, he recalled that 25,000 hectares of illicit crops are planted annually. However, he questioned that the Government did not set the goal of reaching 40,000.
