UBC Student Flies Home Twice a Week, Saves Money on Rent in Vancouver – A Unique Cost-Saving Strategy

Vancouver

A student prefers to take a return flight (PP) to campus rather than being a boarding house student. The reason is, the cost of plane tickets is much cheaper than renting an apartment.

Reported NDTV, Saturday (24/2/2024) Tim Chen, a University of British Columbia (UBC) student from Calgary was in the spotlight after sharing on Reddit that he flies back and forth to campus twice a week. The reason is because the ticket price is cheaper than carrying a monthly rental in Vancouver.

He detailed that he spent $150 (Rp. 2.3 million) per return flight, which means almost $1,200 per month (Rp. 18.7 million). Meanwhile, the rental price for a one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver is around $2,100 (Rp. 32.8 million).

“I have two days to get to campus for classes (Tuesday and Thursday), I fly to Vancouver in the morning and back to Calgary in the evening. I’ve flown Air Canada for all of these flights, and in January, I made 7 round trips like this. I found there were savings in rent because I didn’t have to pay rent in Calgary (living with my parents) except just paying utilities, and it was much cheaper than renting a 1b for 2,000 more in Vancouver ,” he wrote.

Netizens have had various reactions to this story. Some can imagine how dizzy he would be if he missed his flight.

Some netizens also imagined how much time they spent traveling to the airport, checking in and waiting for flights. Of course the time is not flexible because it has to be tight with the lecture schedule.

However, there are also many who understand and agree with Chen’s method. After all, the flight was only an hour but he could save a lot of money.
