The Supreme Court canceled a law in the state of Louisiana on Monday that is very restrictive regarding abortion. The highest U.S. court of justice also paved the way for a resumption of federal executions.

According to her opponents, the canceled law would have led to the closure of two of the three abortion clinics in the conservative southern state. Moderately conservative chief justice John Roberts joined four progressive colleagues to refer the law to the trash.
The law passed in 2014 provides that only physicians are allowed to interrupt pregnancies who are allowed to do so in a clinic less than 50 kilometers from their facility. The aim is to protect women from complications and to maintain continuity of care, the proponents say.
Regardless of the local significance of the case, it served as a barometer of the Court’s steadfastness to maintain its historic 1973 judgment, which recognized the right to abortion.
On the other hand, the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the Trump administration’s decision to resume executions at federal level after a 17-year hiatus. In particular, the Court refused to examine an objection to the injection method which the government intends to use.
Thus, unless another method would be more successful, the US will execute Daniel Lewis Lee on July 13. As a supporter of white supremacy, he was sentenced to death in 1999 for murdering a couple and an eight-year-old girl.
