Two women frozen to death at high altitude in the Alps | Abroad

What should have been an adventurous trip turned into a nightmare. The three had been on the Monte Rosa massif in the Alps, with the highest peak being the Dufourspitze, at more than 4,600 meters above sea level. Shortly after they reached the top, there was a big storm with strong gusts of wind. The trio called 911, after which a rescue helicopter tried to reach them but was unable to due to the extreme weather. The rescuers had to continue on foot.

severe hypothermia

The rescuers found the three around 9 p.m. on the Italian side of the Pyramide Vincent, a slightly lower peak. However, they arrived just too late; one of the women died around that time from severe hypothermia. The other climber, who was also severely hypothermic, was taken to a hut. Rescuers tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the woman, but to no avail.

The man was taken to a hospital in Switzerland. He has severe frostbite on his hands, but his condition is not a cause for concern, Italian news agency Ansa said.
