Neo-captain Andrea Pavlovic (21) was the star of the opening day of the mixed Europe Cup doubles in Linz. The Croatian led the bottom of the Bundesliga sensationally with a 3-1 win against Santa Eularia (Spa) and a 3-2 Malonne (Bel) to two opening wins. The third point went to the newly crowned U19 Top of Austria winner Anastasiya Radzionava (16). Should another sensation succeed against Mori (It) or Real Priego (Spa) on Friday, LZ Linz will be in the round of 16.

SPG Linz also kept all their chances of advancement: After the 3: 1 against Secuiesc Odorheiu (Rum), thanks to two successes by Korean newcomer Taehyun Kim (including the decisive 3: 2 and 6: 5 in the decisive set at the beginning against Loso), followed a 1-3 defeat against Hungarian champions Kalo Meh Pecs. A win on Friday against Marinkolor (Kro) or against Marcozzi (It) could be enough for Patrik Juhasz and Co. to advance.
The omens for the ÖTTV clover leaf were not too rosy: only cup finalist Stockerau has a victory – namely the 4: 0 against Bundesliga promoted Kennelbach – as a dress rehearsal. The Lower Austrians around David Serdaroglu want to assert themselves in Varazdin (Kro) from Friday against UMMC Jekaterinenburg 2 (Rus), hosts Starr, Vydrany (Slk) and Burgos (Spa).
As a clear outsider, Salzburg will host the EuropeCup premiere from Friday: The runner-up will have to face Japan star Koyo Kanamitsu (absent due to family problems) – as in the 1: 4 in Baden. A rise of the rump team around mixed national champion Michael Trink against the top teams Hoboken (Bel), Ostrava (Cz), Real Priego (Spa) and Carrara (It) would be a big surprise.
