Two thirds of Latvians use a mobile phone during a trip

70 percent of Latvians use a mobile phone during the trip, according to a survey conducted by “If Apdrošināšana”. Nearly half, or 48 percent, use their smartphone for navigation, 35 percent make calls and talk through headphones, and 14 percent listen to their favorite music. But more than a tenth admit to making phone calls without using a hands-free system, while nine percent surf the Internet and write text messages.

If conducted a study in the Baltic States on the use of a mobile phone at the wheel of a car. The study found that Latvians (70 percent) use mobile phones most actively while driving, followed by Estonians (68 percent) and Lithuanians (65 percent).

Estonians (13 percent), then Latvians (12 percent), but less often Lithuanians (10 percent) make the most phone calls without using a hands-free system. Residents of the Baltic neighboring countries use the Internet or exchange written information while driving: 10 percent of Lithuanians admit to doing so, 9 percent – Latvians, 8 percent – Estonians.

Although the Road Traffic Regulations state that parallel non-driving activities are not permitted while driving, the use of mobile phones in cars has become a major problem today. The results of the study reveal that the public does not yet pay enough attention to it.

In all three countries, men surveyed said they used their phones much more often than women. In Latvia, 78 percent of men and 61 percent of women have used a mobile phone while driving. In Lithuania, on the other hand, 73 percent of men admitted to using the phone while driving and 57 percent of women, while in Estonia the ratio is 73 percent and 63 percent.
