Guide Michelin awards two restaurants in Frankfurt and one in Darmstadt with one of the coveted stars. The joy of the restaurateurs is great.

Frankfurt/Darmstadt – The Michelin restaurant guide awarded the two Frankfurt restaurants “Main Tower Restaurant & Lounge” and “Masa Japanese Cuisine” with one star for the first time. A Darmstadt restaurant also received a star.

Martin Weghofer, the Frankfurt chef de cuisine of the Main Tower Restaurant & Lounge, describes the feeling of suddenly having a star, and that at only 24 years old, as “very, very good”. “I’m proud of our team. We work a lot and hard,” he says on the phone on Wednesday afternoon. He talks fast and excitedly. Two hours earlier, he personally accepted the award from the “Guide Michelin” restaurant guide in Hamburg.

Hesse has thus added three one-star restaurants. In the edition of the “Michelin Guide” presented on Wednesday, the “Main Tower Restaurant & Lounge”, which is on the 53rd floor at a height of 187 meters, also received a star in Frankfurt, as well as the “Masa Japanese Cuisine” on Hanauer Landstrasse excellent. The “Ox” in Darmstadt with chef de cuisine David Rink also received a star for the first time. In addition, the “Mondi” in Kassel received a “green star”, which honors particularly sustainable and environmentally conscious houses.

None of the Hessian restaurants that have already received awards lost a star this year. As a result, there are now 17 one-star hotels and two two-star restaurants in the Westend with the Frankfurt addresses “Lafleur” and “Gustav”. Gourmets in Hesse still have to do without a three-star restaurant.

In the current issue, a total of 327 houses are listed nationwide. Back to Frankfurt to Weghofer: How did he become a chef? He was born in Rothenburg an der Fulda, but even as a child he moved a lot. “My parents are both trained chefs. When I was 13, I did my first internship in a star restaurant in Bavaria as a schoolboy. But I didn’t like that. I only peeled potatoes and cleaned fridges.”

Of course, that is also one of the tasks of an intern, but you should learn more in the process. “I also pay attention to that with our annual interns,” says Weghofer, who did his cooking training at the Hotel Kloster Haydau, then worked at the Schlosshotel Kronberg, among other places, and completed internships with the star chefs Nils Henkel and Hans Stefan Steinheuer.

Two and a half years ago, the Maintower Restaurant & Lounge was renovated and Weghofer and his young team have been there ever since. Guests can choose between a four to seven course menu. “Asian flavors are our strength.” There is a lot of fish and meat dishes on the menu.

The four-course menu costs 98 euros, the seven-course menu 159 euros (excluding drinks). The special recommendation is Japanese Wagyu (surcharge 75 euros). “But we also have a vegetarian menu,” says Weghofer.
