Two new signs installed on the A11 in homage to the city of Chartres

This is the end of a long misunderstanding for the cultural and heritage assistant, Isabelle Vincent.

“I fought for these new panels. On the old ones there was not even the Unesco inscription… ”

Isabelle Vincent (Culture and Heritage Assistant)

In recent days, on the A11 towards Chartres, two new signs have been installed. One evoking the Notre-Dame cathedral and the second extolling the art of Chartres stained glass. “The Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (Dreal), and the motorway network have produced a new national graphic charter”, explains Isabelle Vincent.

“The cathedral is a living vessel”, for Stéphane Brosseau, new deputy director of the sanctuary of Chartres

Outside the old horizontal panels, make way for the vertical panels. “The new charter has introduced a color code, as well as the presence of three elements,” continues Isabelle Vincent:

  • The monument concerned
  • A plant element
  • A mineral element

A project that did not cost the community anything

By taking the A11, motorists will be able to see Notre-Dame, from the front, on the first panel, accompanied by an ear of wheat. And on the second, the inscription “Chartres, the art of stained glass”, completed with a sheep reminiscent of the statuary of the south portal of the cathedral.

A stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, Saint-Denis, another star of Gothic art

The assistant, who specifies that this operation did not cost the community anything, is delighted with the numerous exemptions obtained for this project. “On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Notre-Dame’s registration with Unesco, we were able to install these panels earlier than expected. The second derogation concerns the color, blue, which is not part of the visual charter, and which has been validated by the regional prefect. Finally, we were able to install two panels in both directions, instead of one. “
