Two light earthquakes in Baden-Württemberg

Stuttgart. According to the police, there were two earthquakes in several districts in southwest Germany on Sunday evening. The Reutlingen police said they were noticeable around 6.40 p.m. in the Tübingen and Reutlingen districts and in the Zollernalb district. So far, no damage has been reported to the police headquarters.

The state earthquake service reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 with an epicenter in Jungingen around 6:37 p.m. in an initial automated report for the Zollernalb district in the evening. About an hour later, a second, lighter earthquake with a magnitude of 1.8 followed with an epicenter in Hechingen.

Earthquakes were also felt in Tübingen, Reutlingen and Ulm

The first quake was also noticeable in the districts of Tübingen and Reutlingen, said the Reutlingen police. It was also felt briefly in Ulm, 75 kilometers away, wrote the “Südwest Presse”.

Smaller earthquakes are not uncommon in Baden-Württemberg. For example, on December 1 of last year there was a 3.9 magnitude quake in the same region. At that time, the earthquake service had received around 6,000 reports. “3.9 is a moderately strong earthquake,” said Stefan Stange from the state earthquake service in December. Slight damage such as cracks in the plaster cannot be ruled out. Structural damage such as wall cracks are to be expected around a magnitude of 5.0.

The Albstadt shear zone runs in the region, in which two subterranean rock complexes want to move a few centimeters in different directions.
