The government is bringing twelve Dutch women suspected of terrorist offenses and their 28 children from northern Syria to the Netherlands. The women are arrested and tried after arriving in the Netherlands. The group is already on their way.

The children will be handed over to the Child Protection Board, wrote Ministers Yesiligöz (Justice and Security) and Hoekstra (Foreign Affairs) in a letter to the House of Representatives.

The Rotterdam court has ruled a May that the suspects had to be brought quickly to the Netherlands, so that they could be tried in the Netherlands. “By moving to the Netherlands, the cabinet aims to prevent these twelve suspects from going unpunished”, the ministers write, also on behalf of the defense minister.

The government has always considered it too dangerous to withdraw women from Syria, but has now ordered a special operation “after a careful process of preparation”.

3.5 years in prison

The twelve women are the last to be subject to legal proceedings. In June 2021 the first woman was collected, Ilham B. she has since been sentenced three and a half years of imprisonmentone of which is conditional.

Again in February five IS women recovered. Their business is still ongoing.

For security and privacy reasons, the cabinet does not want to say anything about the group of women who are arriving in the Netherlands. Nothing is mentioned about the crimes they are suspected of.
