Tuchów without EU funds. Mayor Małgorzata Marszałek asks councilors to rethink the decision on the “LGBT free zone”

Małopolski Tuchów is one of the six cities that did not receive EU funds and whose local authorities have adopted resolutions on “LGBT-free zones”. The mayor Magdalena Marszałek informed that she had asked the councilors to review the decision to adopt the resolution.

On Tuesday, the European Commission adopted a list of 127 projects under the “Town Partnership” program, which received a total of EUR 2,324,327 from EU funds. The program was able to obtain funding of up to EUR 25,000 for projects that mobilize citizens at local level to debate specific issues on the European political agenda.

Same day EU Equality Commissioner Helena Dalli announces that six program applications for funding have been rejected. According to the commissioner, Polish local authorities were involved in their submission and adopted resolutions on “LGBT-free zones” or “family rights”.

“Member States and state authorities must respect EU values and fundamental rights. Therefore, six town twinning applications involving Polish authorities, which adopted resolutions on ‘LGBTI free zones’ or ‘family rights’, were rejected,” she wrote on Twitter.

The mayor asked councilors to “review” the decision on the “LGBT free zone”

One of the cities whose application was rejected is Tuchów in Małopolska. As emphasized by the TVN24 reporter Konrad Borusiewicz, there is no official position that the city will not receive money due to the adopted resolution. However, he noticed that the town had received such subsidies in the last dozen or so years.

The TVN24 reporter informed that on Wednesday the councilors wondered if the “LGBT-free zone” was a good solution, but so far no specific decision has been made in this matter.

The mayor of Tuchów, Magdalena Marszałek, also spoke about the rejected application on Wednesday in an interview with TVN24. She admitted that in 2020 – as in previous years – the city applied for EU funds from the project.

– I must point out that we are not sure whether the resolution adopted by the councilors decided that we did not receive the funds, because we do not have an official letter or position of the European Commission – she said, referring to the resolution adopted earlier this year by councilors regarding the “LGBT free zone”.

The mayor said she informed councilors that the funds were refused. – I asked for such a review of my decision. What their decision will be, I do not know. We will see – added the Marshal. She also noted that “some councilors did not accept this resolution, were against or abstained”. – This part of the councilors is in favor of having another discussion (the adopted resolution – editorial note). There is no unanimity, just like there was in the beginning. Today also the council is not unanimous on this matter – she continued. In her opinion, “this discussion will take a different course”.

There was a jubilee in 2019. “A year later we have practically no cooperation”

The mayor said that because of the commission’s decision “will run out an annual meeting, which gathered here over a hundred people, a delegation from each partner city “Tuchowa. There will be no meeting, joint talks, concerts,” she mentioned.

She noted that the restrictions related to the coronavirus (ban on assemblies – ed.) Are also important here, as a result “cooperation will rather be suspended”. – This financial loss is not the only thing. – she pointed out. – I suspect that other countries will simply not take us seriously today. Our partners can withdraw at any time. Cooperation is always voluntary on both sides, and if there are no conditions for it, if someone does not feel well here, they can simply resign at any time – explained the Marshal.

She noted that the city celebrated its tenth anniversary of international cooperation last year. – We had a beautiful jubilee here. A year later, we have practically no cooperation. This is an image loss that cannot be estimated today. This is not only the 18,000 we are losing – she admitted.

When asked about the activity of LGBT groups in the city, the Mayor Marshal emphasized that “they have never been active and are not active today”. – This LGBT community in Tuchów has never been discussed in public, because there was no such need. There was also no organization that wanted to organize anything in schools or anywhere else. There was no such problem, and today it is very audible – she said.

One quarter of Poland, one third of Poland

How we wrote on Konkret24, almost a quarter of Poland is located within local governments, where legal acts have been adopted that show LGBT or “LGBT ideology” in a negative context. Almost one-third of the country’s territory belongs to local governments that have adopted legislation referring to LGBT or the need to defend the traditional family model.

The adoption of the resolutions by local governments began after the LGBT card was signed by the Warsaw City Hall. The card provides for, among other things, the construction of an intervention hostel for people excluded by their families, the creation of a socio-cultural center for LGBT people, counteracting violence against LGBT people and educational classes on, among others, security.
