    Curfew ends in Turkish cities

After a four-day curfew in the metropolis of Istanbul and 30 other cities and provinces in Turkey, people are allowed to leave their homes. The ban on going out expired yesterday at midnight (local time). The measure had been in effect since Thursday, a public holiday in Turkey.

While there were still half-day shopping opportunities on Thursday and Friday, the residents had to stay at home with a few exceptions at the weekend. The people seemed to stick to the measures as far as possible. The streets remained largely empty and quiet. In the metropolis of Istanbul, the calls of the bakers were heard who were allowed to export their goods.

VW also starts up production at its headquarters

After a forced break of almost one and a half months, the VW Group is slowly starting car production again at the Wolfsburg headquarters. In addition to Wolfsburg, Hanover and Emden as well as further locations in Europe are to be added. During the interruption – triggered in mid-March by the slump in car demand, cut supply chains worldwide and contagion risks in the factories – VW had only kept small on-call teams in the factories. Stricter hygiene concepts, distance rules and shorter cleaning intervals now apply. In addition, shift plans should be modified to temporarily have fewer employees in the same room at the same time.

The truck and bus subsidiary MAN in Munich also starts today. The VW-US plant in Chattanooga (Tennessee) returns from the break on May 3. In contrast to Germany, where short-time work had been registered for tens of thousands of employees, the US colleagues have recently had unpaid forced leave. Factories in Latin America and South Africa are scheduled to start operating in early May.

New York plans to return to normal

The governor of New York City, which was particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, has presented a plan to return to normal. “We want to start the economy again,” said Andrew Cuomo at his daily press conference on Sunday, “but we have to be careful and smart about it.” For example, companies should ensure that distance rules can be observed in their offices and factories and that they have enough breathing masks for their employees.

The first companies could open on May 15, Cuomo said – provided the situation continues to improve. At the height of the pandemic, nearly 800 people died in New York every day, and the death toll fell below 400 on Saturday. Cuomo fears, however, that this may change again if the lockdown ends too quickly.
