Trump Proposes Two-Tier NATO: Countries Spending Less Than 2% of GDP on Defense to lose Protection

Billionaire Trump proposes to deprive the Alliance of collective protection of those who spend less than 2% of their GDP on defense.

The controversial American politician and US presidential candidate Donald Trump made a rather controversial proposal: he wants NATO countries to be divided into “equals” and those who are “more equal”, that is, to create a two-level formation in the Alliance, where some member states will not be protected by Article 5writes CNN.

It is also understood that senior European diplomats in Washington are keen to hold meetings with Trump’s allies and want to understand his true political intentions, especially in the context of the controversial billionaire becoming the head of the White House again.

CNN journalists write that Trump will consider the possibility of creating a two-tier NATO. Externally, his position looks like this: states that do not spend the required 2% of their gross domestic product on defense fall into the 2nd level of membership and will not be protected by Article No. 5.

It is known that Article 5 guarantees that the resources of the entire Alliance will be used to protect any member country in the event of an attack.

This information has sparked debate: some experts believe that some states have actually “relaxed” and spend less than 2% on defense; in turn, others say that with the help of the idea of a two-tier NATO, Trump wants to “get out” of protecting some countries of the Alliance, handing them over to be devoured by Putin and other aggressors. The latter version is supported by the fact that Trump, as an American politician, is too loyal to the Russian Federation, so he is reasonably suspected of trying to split the Alliance.

The publication also notes how European diplomats were quite angry about Trump’s recent statement that, once back in power, he would allow the aggressor country of the Russian Federation to “do whatever it wants” with any NATO state that does not contribute enough funds.

Let us remind you that according to the new rating, Biden is slightly ahead of Trump for the post of head of the White House.

As previously reported, Zelensky reacted on the plan attributed to Trump to surrender Crimea and Donbass to Russia.
