Trump nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Trump was nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, which should be signed on September 15 at the White House and sanction the normalization of relations between the two countries: the winner, however, will be announced in October next year, after the end of the current presidential term. Trump’s candidacy – less than two months after the vote is promoting diplomatic agreements in the Middle East e in the Balkans – was disclosed to the broadcaster Fox News by Christian Tybring-Gjedde, conservative member of the Norwegian parliament and president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly: it was he himself, he explained, who presented it, as he had already done in 2018 for the Singapore summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un . I think he did more than most of the candidates to achieve peace among the nations, said Tybring-Gjedde, who does not consider himself a fan of Trump, but appreciates his commitment to resolving global conflicts, such as that from India and Pakistan in Kashmir, or that between the two Koreas.

The committee should look at the facts and judge them on them, not on his behavior, continued the Norwegian parliamentarian, a member of the populist party of Progress which, like Trump, fights against immigration. There are people who have received the Nobel Peace Prize in recent years who have done much less by Donald Trump: for example Barack Obama – who received it in 2009, ed – did nothing. In the letter with which he presented the candidacy, Tybring-Gjedde explained that the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates it could be a game changer, capable of making the Middle East a region of cooperation and prosperity.

According to the regulation, the five members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, appointed for five years by the Oslo parliament, will select the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2021 choosing from the applications sent from past members and winners, from foreign parliamentarians and heads of government, from international organizations and institutions, from university professors and members of the Hague tribunal. Over 300 applications have arrived for 2020, a historical record for the recognition that will be awarded as always in October: the list of candidates, however, will only be made public in 50 years.
