(CNN) – In a prime-time speech to millions of Americans, President Donald Trump inaccurately described the travel restrictions he is imposing on travel between U.S Y Europe.
Trump said that “we will suspend all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days” before adding that there will be “exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate evaluations.”
Those exemptions are much more extensive than the president said. They apply to all lawful permanent residents of the United States, citizens and some of their families, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.
The travel restrictions Trump is enacting are, in fact, much more similar to those enacted in China.
The ban also does not apply to all of Europe, as the president said in his comments, but to the nations of the Schengen zone, which includes Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland , Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
This means that Americans and US permanent residents Those in Europe will still be able to fly to Europe and will be allowed to return to the United States during this 30-day period.
They will simply be reviewed upon entering the United States and will face quarantine or restrictions on their movement in the United States for 14 days.
However, it is unclear whether airlines will continue to fly routes, whether passenger demand for European citizens is depleted due to the ban.
Trump also seemed to correct himself by banning the charge. In his speech, he said: “There will be exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate examinations, and these prohibitions will apply not only to the enormous amount of trade and cargo, but to other things as we gain approval.”
Later, the president tweeted: “… remember, it is very important that all countries and companies know that trade will not be affected in any way by the 30-day restriction on travel from Europe. The restriction stops people, not property. “
This does not mean that the President is not taking an extremely severe measure, but it is not the global suspension of travel between the United States and Europe as he described in his speech.
