WASHINGTON – Ex president United States of America (AS) Donald Trump said he had threatened NATO that Washington would not help them in the event of a conflict with Russia if they remain reluctant to increase military spending.

When he became president, Trump demanded that NATO partners in the European Union increase their defense spending and meet the 2 percent target. He claims that Europe is liberating and using US capabilities without making a fair contribution.

Trump told supporters at a rally Saturday in Wyoming that, unlike his predecessors, he was forthright in admitting that Washington would not help NATO.

“You’re in arrears, you owe billions and billions of dollars,” Trump told European countries.

When asked by one NATO member: “Does this mean if we are not paid in full and if we are attacked by Russia, does this mean you will not protect us?” Trump replied: “Yes, we will not protect you,” as quoted from SputnikSunday (29/5/2022).

The former US president claimed after that, money poured in from members of the European military alliance and he made them pay $430 billion to NATO.

Trump claimed that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was allegedly his “biggest fan”.

Earlier this week, Stoltenberg said that the new NATO Strategic Concept, which is expected to be adopted at the Madrid summit in June, would no longer name Russia as the bloc’s strategic partner.
