Truck driver causes multiple crashes on German highway A48 due to drunk driving

KEHRIG – A 37-year-old truck driver was driven on the German A48 from Koblenz in the direction of the Dreieck Vulkaneifel on Monday morning around 5 am.

Between the intersection between Polch and Mayen, the driver left the road and crashed into the central guardrail. He then left the highway at the Elztal-Nord service station. He then hit a truck that was parked on the right side of the road and pushed another truck that was parked in front of him.

The driver of the truck that was hit first, who was asleep in the cab, was first trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by the fire brigade. He was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver, who was asleep in the tractor-trailer parked in front of him, was slightly injured on his elbow.

The person who caused the accident, who also suffered a minor injury to his knee, said that the cause of the accident was delay. However, he was found to be under the influence of alcohol. A breath alcohol test at the scene showed a level of 1.16 per mile. A blood sample was then taken to the hospital and his driver’s license was confiscated.

All three trucks were no longer drivable. The recovery work is still going on.
