Trends in Increasing Corona Virus Cases in the World, This is a Lesson for Indonesia Page all

KOMPAS.com – The increasing trend of corona virus cases globally has seen in recent times.

To date, more than 10 million people have been infected with the corona virus worldwide with more than 500,000 dead.

In Indonesia, new cases are also reported every day with an average number of more than 1,000 cases.

Looking at this condition, what can be done to strike a pandemic curve or slow down the spread of the corona virus?

Lessons for Indonesia

Epidemiologist from Griffith University Australia, Dicky Budiman, said that there are two important lessons that can be referred by Indonesia in the midst of this condition.

“First, testing must be seen as an irreplaceable primary strategy. Without testing massive and aggressive, it is impossible for us to know most of Covid-19 sufferers or virus carriers, “Dicky said Kompas.com, Monday (6/29/2020).

Without this strategy, Dicky argues, it is impossible to trace cases of contact and isolate and treat virus carriers.

“Second, the government has responded quickly and precisely at every level. It has been proven both scientifically and historically,” he continued.

According to Dicky, this step is proven to have an effect on the success of pandemic control.

What can be done?

Contacted separately, Monash Business School’s Doctor of Health Economics candidate and doctor from the UGM Department of Health Policy and Management, Giovanni van Empel, said there were a number of steps that could be taken to deal with this condition.

“The precautionary principle needs to be used because there is still much that is not known about this virus,” Giovanni said.

According to him, things that can be done to reduce the spread of the virus today are as follows:

  • The community still avoids traveling if it is not needed or not so important, and the discipline of implementing health protocols. Use masks, wash hands, avoid touching, and keep a safe distance
  • Consider continuing to expand the Covid-19 referral hospital network so that the burden of medical personnel can be reduced (deconcentrated)
  • Local governments can strengthen effective isolation tracking activities to anticipate the emergence of new clusters

Previously, Dicky also mentioned the need for understanding that the pandemic was a shared responsibility.

“Each of us has an important role to inhibit and slow the transmission of Covid-19, namely by changing behavior,” he said.

The behavior change in question is by wearing a mask, washing hands, and keeping a distance.

“This is very basic and useful for helping to curve,” said Dicky.
