Treating and Understanding Frozen Shoulder: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Byeong-ho Jeon, Director of Gayonse Hospital Gimpo Branch

The shoulder is a joint that can rotate 360 degrees and has a lot of movement, being used more than 3,000 times a day. However, as it is a heavily used area, there is a high risk of damage due to various causes, and degenerative changes that occur with age also appear quickly and can cause various shoulder diseases. Among them, frozen shoulder is a representative example.

Frozen shoulder is a name given because it commonly occurs in people in their 50s, and the exact name of the disease is frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis). It is a representative disease among middle-aged people that causes shoulder pain and movement disorders mainly due to inflammation and adhesions in the joint capsule surrounding the shoulder due to degenerative changes caused by aging.

Additionally, excessive use or repetitive movement of the shoulder can cause irritation to the joint capsule, which can cause adhesions even at a young age if microscopic damage accumulates. In addition, you should be careful because the incidence of frozen shoulder may increase if you are on a drastic diet or have an underlying disease such as diabetes.

The main symptom is pain around the shoulder. The problem is that the symptoms seem to be temporarily relieved by treatments such as relaxing the shoulder muscles with a massage or applying a patch, so many cases are left unattended. However, if the inflammation is left unimproved, not only can pain appear even at rest, but nighttime pain can also become worse, causing sleep problems, and both active and passive movement can be limited, making normal life difficult. It is advisable to carry out treatment.

Jeon Byeong-ho, director of the Gimpo branch of Gayonsae Hospital, said, “At the end of frozen shoulder, stiff shoulders are naturally relaxed and pain is relieved, so it is known to be a disease that can be cured naturally. However, it takes a long time for the pain to go away, and of course it takes exercise.” “Because the limitations may remain permanently, if there are any suspicious symptoms, an orthopedic diagnosis should be made at an early stage and appropriate treatment should be administered,” he explained.

He added, “However, because frozen shoulder shows similar symptoms to other shoulder diseases such as rotator cuff tear, calcifying tendinitis, and shoulder impingement syndrome, it is important to establish a treatment plan after an accurate diagnosis through an experienced medical staff.”

Fortunately, early and mid-stage frozen shoulder can be improved by combining exercise therapy with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, drug therapy, injection therapy, and manual therapy. You can take painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and inflammation, use a syringe to inject substances that strengthen muscles or ligaments, or manually stimulate the joints to restore function and range of motion.

On the other hand, patients with terminal frozen shoulder need active treatment through surgical treatment such as capsular release surgery. Joint capsular release is a surgical method that involves inserting an endoscopic camera into the joint area with inflammation and adhesions and then directly observing the lesion area in real time for treatment.
