Travel ban imposed for 8,000 years

A 44-year-old Australian citizen claims he is subject to a travel ban of 8,000 years, unless he pays the outstanding sum of 1.8 million pounds, equivalent to over 21 million Norwegian kroner, in child support to his ex-wife.

The man lives normally in Israel, and it is the Israeli authorities who have imposed the travel ban on him.

Highest possible date

The travel ban means that the Australian can not leave Israel until December 31, 1999 due to a “stay or exit” order from 2013, after a family lawsuit, according to The Guardian.

The court ruled that the man must pay 1,200 pounds a month for each of his two children until they turn 18 years old. It is not clear whether he has made any payments as of today, or whether he must pay the full amount in advance to revoke the order to stay on departure.

The year 9999 should have been set arbitrarily because it was the highest possible date allowed by the system.

The man was previously married to an Israeli woman. In 2011, she moved back to her home country with their two children. In 2012, the man followed. He claims that since then he has not been able to leave the country as a result of the court decision made in 2013.

– Pursued

To Australian News.com he describes it as having been locked up in Israel.

He also believes that Australian citizens have been “persecuted by the Israeli legal system” on the grounds that they have been married to Israeli women.

The British journalist Marianne Azizi has worked to raise awareness about the problem and believes it is almost impossible to determine how many men are affected by the same thing.

The director of the website “No Exit Order”, Sorin Luca, says that a woman can easily cause a travel ban for their child’s fathers, as well as demand child support that can extend throughout the child’s childhood.

However, a Supreme Court ruling from 2017 ruled that fathers should no longer be solely responsible for alimony, especially in cases where their ex-wives make more money than they do.
