Trapt’s drummer leaves the group (mainly “for political reasons”)

Trapt drummer Michael Smith has officially left the group and released a lengthy statement detailing his decision.

The move comes as Trapt has had a tumultuous year, entangled in the headlines about singer Chris Taylor Brown’s slippage on social media. The singer strongly criticized the Black Lives Matter movement, spread misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic, and was ultimately kicked off Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for standing up for adult women who have sex with underage men and for using “hate speech”.

Michael Smith, who didn’t play on Trapt’s last record, Shadow Work, released in 2020 (Adam Prentice is credited on the record, according to a press release from last May), said his decision to withdraw from the group was “bittersweet” and that some of the public positions taken on behalf of the group (by Mr. Brown) were not representative of his personal views.

The drummer added that the public reaction to these controversial positions also contributed to his departure.

I don’t agree with the way some things have been communicated to our fans and the music community for which I have such great respect.
