transgender men under 25 will be eligible for reimbursement for contraceptives

A transgender man under the age of 25 will now be able to access, with a medical prescription, reimbursement for contraceptives under the same conditions as a woman. The Council of Ministers approved on Friday the extension of free contraceptives to transgender men, on the proposal of Sarah Schlitz, Secretary of State for Gender Equality, and Frank Vandenbroucke, Minister of Public Health.

Until now, the royal decree providing for the full reimbursement of contraceptives for those under 25 or for people with increased intervention status (BIM) specified that it concerned women. A transgender man, having changed his identity card so that it corresponds to his real identity, but still having a corporality allowing him a pregnancy, could therefore not access this special scheme when he was eligible for it, explains the firm of Sarah Schlitz in a press release.

It is fundamental for me to guarantee everyone the same rights to dispose of their bodies. This requires equal access to contraceptives. […] I welcome this step forward, especially since transgender men are part of the public at risk of great precariousness.“, points out the Secretary of State.
