US President-elect Joe Biden, on Tuesday, nominated Pennsylvania State Health Secretary Rachel Levin to assume the post of Assistant Secretary of Health and Services, to be the first transgender to hold a federal position.
Levin was appointed Pennsylvania’s first Secretary of Health in 2017, and she has led the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and regular briefings alongside Gov. Tom Wolf.
Levine was the first transgender person to be appointed to a cabinet position in Pennsylvania when she became a GP in 2015.
Levin is a graduate of Harvard College and Tulane University School of Medicine, and trained in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
She is a professor at the Pennsylvania State School of Medicine and leads the Association of State and County Health Officials.
