(dpa) – A transformer exploded in a power station in the Queens borough of New York. The New York police announced on Friday night on Twitter. The flashes of light over the city were probably due to the explosion, it said. The fire is under control.
A company spokesman for energy company Con Edison told CNN that there were several fires. According to NBC, some transformers went offline, which triggered the fire. The evening sky was illuminated in shades of blue by the explosions. The smoke was visible as far as Manhattan. Many concerned citizens would have contacted.

According to NBC, there was a power outage at LaGuardia International Airport in the same district. The airport tweeted that passengers should therefore plan additional time. Because of the power failure, flight operations are limited. Not all flights would take off. The flight status should be checked with the respective airlines.
