Train Traffic Disruption at Schiphol: Updates, Delays, and Travel Restrictions

Oct 4, 2023 at 7:37 AM Update: 8 minutes ago

Train traffic around Schiphol will run according to timetable again on Wednesday morning. Due to a disruption, a large part of the train traffic around the airport and elsewhere in the country was paralyzed on Tuesday evening. As a result, some travelers were delayed for hours.

“It may be the case that here and there a train is shorter than planned, but we worked hard last night to get the trains running according to the timetable again,” says an NS spokesperson.

On Tuesday afternoon, a data and telephone failure disrupted communication between train traffic control and drivers. As a result, no trains could run at all during the evening rush hour.

Later, train traffic started again. However, travelers around Utrecht and Amsterdam continued to suffer from problems on the railways all evening. The evening rush hour on Tuesday is one of the busiest times of the week for public transport.

There will be no more problems during the morning rush hour on Wednesday. Train traffic around Utrecht, Amsterdam and Schiphol is running again as planned. However, there are far fewer trains running between Utrecht Central Station and Amersfoort Central Station due to a defective switch. That is expected to last all day.

Travelers who have to go to, from or past Schiphol are still advised to check the travel planner. Due to work in the tunnel tubes, fewer trains will pass through the airport between October 2 and 8. The travel restrictions also apply to the weekend of October 14 and 15.
