Train crash in Český Brod: Dozens injured, drivers pulled dead from cab

The accident happened shortly after half past nine in the evening, a CityElefant passenger train traveling from Prague’s Masaryk railway station to Řečan nad Labem drove from behind onto a ČD Cargo postal train standing behind a signal at Český Brod station. The sets were very wedged together after the accident. The passenger train had to be stabilized by firefighters with chains so that it would not overturn.

Petr Svoboda, a spokesman for Central Bohemian firefighters, confirmed one victim to the news and a total of 35 injured, four of them seriously. Eight wounded were minors.

The driver of the passenger train, who remained wedged in the cab after the collision, did not survive the accident. At first he was missing, finally the firefighters rescued the dead body.

“Four seriously injured people were transported to Prague hospitals,” said Petra Effenbergerová, a spokeswoman for the Central Bohemian ambulance.

Havlíček: The technique did not fail

The Minister of Transport, Karel Havlíček, arrived at the scene of the accident, indicating that human error could be behind the accident, because the track on which the collision occurred is the best secured in the Czech Republic. According to him, the technology probably did not fail.

“The fact is that this is probably the best secured track in the Czech Republic, according to the first indications, there was no technical failure, but I do not want to evaluate it prematurely,” said Havlíček. He considers the 40-year-old driver of a passenger train to be experienced. According to him, he was not overworked, he returned from vacation.

The mail train was standing in front of a signal

According to Czech Railways spokesman Radek Joklík, a passenger train traveling from Prague collided with a freight train that stood in front of an entrance signal in Český Brod.

Joklík told ČTK that the Czech Railways CityElefant passenger train ran to the end of the ČD Cargo freight express. The passenger train derailed after the collision. Traffic on the track should be at least partially resumed by five o’clock in the morning, but the situation may change at night, he said.

It is not yet clear why the trains collided. The operation of trains between Kolín and Prague is interrupted. Czech Railways diverts trains through Lysá nad Labem.

In recent days, this is the third train crash in the Czech Republic. On the same line between Prague and Kolín on Friday evening near Běchovice, a train without passengers crashed into a waiting express train, no one was injured. The railway inspectorate leans towards human error in determining the cause of the accident. According to the previous investigation, the human error was also behind the collision of two passenger trains on the single-track line near Pernink in the Karlovy Vary region, in which two people died last week and another 24 were injured.

On Tuesday, Minister Havlíček promised on Tuesday that record investments would be made in securing the railways. “It will be one of the largest investments in transport infrastructure in the Czech Republic,” said the minister. In the next decade, according to him, the state will invest tens of billions of crowns in the introduction of equipment on the lines, and tens of billions of crowns will be spent on train equipment.
