Police in Muskogee, Oklahoma tells CNN that they rushed to the in-laws’ home on Monday after a woman raised the alarm that someone had a weapon.
When they arrived at the scene, a dead person was found, shortly after gunshots were heard. Further into the home, two additional bodies were then found.
The three dead people were identified as Johnson’s wife’s parents and her 11-year-old nephew. The police tell CNN that the incident is being investigated as a “murder-suicide”.
Setting contestants
Following the tragic incident, the Johnsons have suspended their participation in Nascar’s city race in Chicago. His team, the Legacy Motor Club, wrote in a statement:
“The Johnson family asks that you respect their privacy at this time and will not comment further.”
“We are deeply affected by the terrible death of Chandra Johnson’s family. The entire Nascar family extends its deepest sympathies and condolences during this difficult time,” read a statement from the Nascar series.
Johnson has won the Nascar series a total of seven times, most recently in 2016.
