Eyewitnesses recounted the moments of the collapse of a two-storey house in the Bahri district of the Gomrok neighborhood in Alexandria, confirming that the collapse occurred at around twelve o’clock on Thursday afternoon.
“Nesma Essam,” a resident of the same street, said: “We heard a solid crash, we ran, and found the house fell and one died… It was a difficult scene, and his wife was screaming, and they pulled his body out from under the rubble.”
While another named “Fatima Sobhi” added: “The deceased does not live here.. By chance, he was at home eating cats, and suddenly it collapsed on him.. May God have mercy on him.”
The Customs Police Department had received a report from the Police Rescue Department stating that an old house, No. 5 Ibn Afif Street, behind 34 Ismail Sabry Street, consisting of a ground floor and an upper first floor had collapsed.
The officers of the department, civil protection forces, neighborhood officials, and the ambulance department moved to the Al-Balagh site. The examination revealed that the house was an old building consisting of two floors, each floor having 4 rooms, and that it had collapsed to the ground.
The collapse resulted in the death of one of its residents, Tariq Muhammad Hassan Abdel Latif, 60 years old, while the Civil Protection Forces managed to extract the body and transfer it to the morgue at the disposal of the Public Prosecution.
Major General Muhammad al-Sharif, the governor of Alexandria, decided to raise the level of readiness of all the governorate agencies, facilities, health and social solidarity, to follow up on the repercussions of the collapse of an old two-storey house in the Gomrok neighborhood.
The governor stressed the intensification of the presence of civil defense and ambulance teams, the Rapid Intervention Unit, Crisis and Disaster Management, and all concerned agencies in the governorate at the site of the aforementioned property collapse.
The statement indicated that all concerned authorities moved immediately to the site of the accident, and all public facilities were separated from the property, with a security cordon around the property in order to preserve the safety of citizens.
