Tragedy shakes Italia: – Lying dead for two years

The chick was unstable, and when the monster came to Como in Italian Lombardia, the neighbours became worried. The trees in the hedge seemed unstable in the face of the strong gusts of wind.

The neighbours called the police.

The police came and rang the doorbell of the house, but nobody answered. They knocked on the door and on the windows, but no one answered. They got the landlord to call the 70 year old woman who lived there, but no one answered.

But it looked like someone was home?

Missing no one

After getting a legal warrant to enter the home, police last week made a find that has shaken Italia, writes The Guardian.

In the chair at the kitchen table sat the 70 year old woman.

She was dead, and had been dead a long time.

Her name was Marinella Beretta, and she was missed by no one.

Neighbours thought she had moved in autumn 2019, because that was the last time anyone had seen her. The housekeeper was new, and had never even met her 70 year old tenant. She had no relatives.

The body of Beretta was mummified. Police therefore estimate that she has been dead for at least two and a half years, but do not suspect anything criminal.

“Tragedy”

Nearly 40 percent of Italians older than 75 live alone, writes The Guardian.

A similar proportion say they have no close family or friends to turn to for support.

Beretta’s death has therefore caused a debate about how the Italian authorities and society take care of its elderly.

“The real tragedy is not that her death was not discovered, but that no one realised she was alive”, writes the Italian newspaper Messaggero.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera the mayor of Como, Mario Landriscina, asks the townspeople to attend her funeral.

– We must become her family, and participate as much as we can in her funeral, says Landriscina.
