“Trade Inspection Finds Irregularities in Fuel Quality Testing Across Poland”

The Trade Inspection examined the quality of unleaded petrol, diesel oil and liquefied gas (LPG) and light fuel oil. Last year, 1,598 samples of liquid fuels (833 petrol and 765 diesel oil), 317 LPG samples and a sample of light fuel oil were taken for testing.

As reported by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, specialists during laboratory tests showed that 21 samples of liquid fuels (19 diesel oil and two gasoline) did not meet the requirements, which is 1.34 percent. examined.

Most irregularities were found in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship

Percentage of questioned fuel samples varied in individual voivodships. During random inspections of petrol stations, most irregularities were found in the following voivodeships: Świętokrzyskie (5.41 percent of those surveyed), mazowieckie (2,40 proc.) i Podlaskie (2,38 proc.).

On the other hand, in the case of inspections of entrepreneurs selected on the basis of e.g. information from drivers, the largest number of deficiencies were found in Kuyavian-Pomeranian (7,14 proc.), warmińsko-mazurskie (6,25 proc.) i West Pomeranian (4,88 proc.).

UOKiK: Constant monitoring of fuel quality brings results

As a result of the inspection of liquefied LPG, the inspectors questioned 10 samples taken at petrol stations and wholesalers, ie 3.15 percent. inspected. Poor quality was recorded in four voivodeships: Małopolskie, Mazowieckie, Pomorskie and Śląskie.

– Constant monitoring fuel quality brings results. During the first inspection in 2003, up to 30 percent of the tested samples did not meet the requirements. In the following years, the number of irregularities decreased. In 2022, we questioned less than 1.5 percent. samples – assessed Tomasz Chróstny, President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection.

Fuel producers, wholesalers, storekeepers and entrepreneurs running stations are subject to inspections. The whole system is divided into two parts: European and national.

In the former, verified entities are chosen by lotcarried out by the President of the Office as the manager of the fuel quality monitoring and control system. In the national part, their selection depends on signals from drivers, other authorities (e.g. police) and negative results from previous years.

How is the quality of fuel checked in Poland?

Percentage of samples that do not meet quality requirements is at a different level every yearwhich may be influenced by both the number of inspected entities and samples taken, as well as changing quality requirements.

The analysis of the results of liquid fuel inspections in 2021 and 2022 showed an improvement in the quality of gasoline in both parts of the system. As in previous years, diesel fuel dominated among the questioned samples of liquid fuels.

In his research, fewer samples that did not meet the quality requirements were recorded in the national part – contrary to the European part. The results of tests on the quality of liquefied natural gas (LPG) in 2022 were worse compared to 2021. – both at stations selected and randomly selected for inspection.
