TOULON: COVID-19 – A new health protocol in schools in the Var

Following a recommendation from the Scientific Council and the Vaccine Strategy Orientation Council (COSV), in an opinion issued on September 13, 10 departments will experiment with a new health protocol in schools.

Saliva test in schools

The system consists in no longer closing the classes from the first positive case, but in testing all the pupils and in isolating only the positive cases. Var is one of the test departments alongside Aisne, Ariège, Côte-d’Or, Landes, Manche, Morbihan, Moselle, Rhône and Val-d’Oise. The implementation of this new protocol was the subject of working meetings between the ARS and the national education services. It will concern primary schools and will be implemented from Monday, October 11, 2021.

In practice, the tests used will be PCR tests on saliva samples carried out with the consent of the parents, in partnership with a medical analysis laboratory. They will take place in two phases:

1) immediate screening of the entire class where the student positive for Covid was detected;
2) screening 7 days later to ensure that no pupil was in the incubation period during the first screening.

Students whose parents do not want them to be tested will be invited to isolate themselves for 7 days. The objective of this experiment is to avoid the systematic closure of classes in the presence of a contact or confirmed student. School directors will be supported in the implementation of the system by teams of Anti-Covid Mediators (MEDILAC).
