Despite the enormous distances in space, the composition of the atmospheres of exoplanets can be analyzed from Earth using a special method: If such an exoplanet passes in front of its star, part of the starlight passes through the gas envelope of the planet, which is slight but characteristic is changed. Astrophysicists refer to this measurement of the atmospheric components as transmission spectroscopy. It is a relatively new, but promising method. A large number of exoplanet transits have already been detected.
