Toshiba builds hybrid locomotives in Rostock – DER SPIEGEL

The Japanese technology group Toshiba will be producing its hybrid locomotives in Rostock from 2021. Preparations for assembly in the maintenance facility of DB Cargo will start next year, as Toshiba and DB Cargo announced on Thursday. 100 locomotives were ordered by DB Cargo.

Rostock has thus prevailed over several years of site negotiations against Kiel. The investments in the plant were initially in the “middle single-digit million range”, the number of new jobs was in the “middle double-digit range”.

With this technology, DB Cargo is improving the CO2 footprint of its fleet of shunting locomotives. Together with Toshiba, the alternative drive concept made of diesel and batteries would set standards in a crucial future technology, said Sigrid Nikutta, DB Group Board Member for Freight Transport and DB Cargo. “We save 30 percent energy and one million liters of diesel a year.”
