Torrential Rain Causes Landslides and Road Closure on National Highway 70

Torrential rain caused landslides in three or four places between Gjøra and Grøa, near the county border between Møre and Romsdal and Trøndelag on Monday afternoon. The road was closed and will not open any time soon.

There is a lot of loose material and stones in the road, and the clean-up work will take time.

– The geologist must make his assessments and then we must find out together how we are going to start the clean-up, says Joakim Albrigtsen, who is a construction manager at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

The road will probably not open on Tuesday and the Swedish Road Administration will make a new assessment on Wednesday at 12.

Joakim Albrigtsen says that the geologist must first assess the landslide hazard before clean-up work can begin.

Ask relatives for help

For those who live in the area, this means that the municipality is divided in two. Mayor of Sunndal, Ståle Refstie (Ap) says that the most important thing is that people who need health services on both sides of the slide get help. The municipality has its own procedures which they follow.

– We have made an agreement with the next of kin so that people can be looked after, says Refstie. Separate agreements have also been made for those who have security alarms.

The municipality has experienced closed roads several times in the past, especially after snowstorms.

The road closure also creates problems for everyone who uses the road to and from work.

– It is never particularly fun or easy when a municipality is split in two, says Refstie. He hopes that the road opens quickly.

There has been a long period of dry weather in Sunndal, before torrential rain came this afternoon.

No damage

There were no cars that were directly hit by the landslide, but there were cars between the landslides.

– There should be no damage to people or cars, says operations manager Finn Harald Salskår at Møre og Romsdal police district.

The road is very busy and many tourists turned around after queuing for a long time.

Alternative detour is via E39 and E136.

There has been torrential rain in the area, which led to several landslides.
