Top Tips and Stories for Running the Hong Kong Marathon

I can be called the black kid king of running hell, and your big day is just a few days away. As long as you don’t make my mistakes, I guarantee that you can finish the race without death or injury, and you can do PB if you want to.

1. Don’t sit on the upper deck when taking a bus

I am what even X said is a useless person who still relies on public transportation at the age of thirty. One week before the competition, I encountered a sudden stop when getting off the car from the upper level and had to stumble down the stairs. Shooting your head off is less of a problem than grabbing firewood. I limped up and down to see an orthopedic surgeon, a physical therapist, and a sprain doctor. When they saw my ankles that were as swollen as a leg, they all said in unison that even Hua Tuo’s rebirth can’t help you, so you can join again next year.

Wow! So I have been practicing for the past year?!

2. Follow the team if you have a team, but it’s not easy to follow if you don’t have a team.

The first year I ran ten kilometers, I still started from Tsim Sha Tsui and the route went through the Western Harbor Crossing. Not long after I started, I was already left behind by my fellow runners, so I had no choice but to hook onto other runners’ cars. Because I was weak and wet, I picked up my daughter and went to hook up the truck. Little did they know that as long as they were wearing stickless clothes, their sense of direction would be zero. There are signs, and you will go in the wrong direction on any road. After getting on the overpass, the class girl unexpectedly turned to the half-marathon track. Gradually, I realized that the more I ran, the more I was going the wrong way, because the bib numbers of the oncoming turnaround runners were of different colors.

By the time we found out, my classmate had already gone the wrong way for almost two kilometers. In the end, we had to trouble the staff on site to let us cross the middle divider and return to the runway in the direction of the Western Harbor Crossing. We walked an extra five kilometers back and forth.

To this day, I am still ridiculed by my former classmates for being a slutty person.

3. Don’t get excited before setting off

This is my first time running the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon, and I plan to PB on my home court. I had packed up the equipment the night before, the most important of which was the flipbelt stuffed with gel and salt crackers. I made an appointment with my running group runners that day to send luggage and go online together. I was so excited when I saw everyone. I put my luggage into a large plastic bag while hanging the blowbelt. I didn’t mind that I stored the flipbelt together.

When it came time to go online, my friend asked me, “Where are your power gels?”
Oops! I am X, I sent some gel.

Without supplies, I ran even slower, so slowly that the mop-up bus started chasing me. Some water stations have begun to close their stalls, energy drinks have been distributed, and only water is provided. One of the volunteers saw that I was about to go back to heaven to meet Jesus, so he took out half a chocolate bar from the bottom of the stage and gave it to me.

I relied on this half bar of chocolate to get to the toll booth at the Western Harbor Crossing. But I was completely exhausted. Without supplies, there was no way I could defeat the boss. Just when I was about to give up, I saw a half-eaten banana beside the ditch. My self-hypnosis banana is wrapped in skin, so it should be clean. I just snapped half of the banana, and after regaining my soul, PW returned to Victoria Park.

4. Don’t follow the car too closely

You are an experience runner, but others are not. There are a lot of road bombs on the track. They will cut left and right, push and hit, and cut off the line at random. I once ran to the overpass opposite Olympian City and was knocked down by someone. I fell from the top of the bridge to the bottom. My hands and feet were bruised and my body was covered in blood. Thanks to kind-hearted running friends, I was helped all the way to the first aid station in front of the Western Harbor Crossing. The first aid officer asked me if I had been hit by a container truck. How many injuries did I suffer from the fall? After they bandaged me, I had to go ashore. The record was DNF, and I went to the hospital for medical treatment on my own.

If you see a situation like Thunder Rescue in the first 20 minutes at the start, stay away. If you go to the street, you are not seeking revenge.

5. Never try new things

Before I set off, a runner recommended a new gel to me. He said it was very suitable for snapping before starting and it had a good starting effect. Is he really such a god? I asked. The runner and Taoist friend told me to try, but I couldn’t resist the temptation and snapped two of them. I felt good at first, and my lower limbs responded quickly with a buzzing sound. But when the dove didn’t reach five hundred meters, I felt dizzy. When I turned into Austin Road, I had to walk to the side of the road and have a hug. When I woke up, twenty minutes had passed. Afterwards, I asked the runner what happened, and he said: “Yes, this will cause some people’s glycemic index to suddenly rise, causing them to feel dizzy. They need to eat one or two hours before starting.”

Your street won’t ring early.

6. This is not how water is replenished

Everyone knows the importance of replenishing water. If you have not replenished water seriously 12 hours before the game, you must not drink too much at once afterwards. The night before the race I decided to drink as much water as possible to make sure I was well hydrated. I drank two liters of Pocari. This time, I decided not to give up. After dinner, I went to bed at nine o’clock. Little did I know that I would have to get up to urinate all night long. I probably didn’t get more than an hour of uninterrupted sleep because I blew my bladder.

Similarly, people are usually nervous the night before a game, which affects their sleep quality, so they start catching up on sleep on Sunday.

You have run hundreds or even thousands of kilometers to reach the starting line. The remaining 21.1 or 42.195 kilometers are your victory lap to celebrate your victory. Relax and keep smiling to complete the race. It is important to run “fast”, but the most important thing is to run “happy”.

See you at the finish line.

There are other things to note, and you can review my three previous articles.

I love running and Hong Kong style is the same as Cantonese hipster. Sub-4 is a lifelong ambition. I hope to make friends through articles and running.
