Top Jokowi! RI in the Top Rank for Covid Recovery in Southeast Asia

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia– Nikkei contains the Covid-19 Recovery Index. A number of countries are measured from China to RI.

The index assesses countries and territories in infection management, vaccine rollout, and social mobility. The higher the rating, the closer the place to recovery, with lower infections, higher inoculation rates, and less stringent social distancing measures.

China has always been in the top position. But now not anymore, and had to settle for 9th position.

According to the Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index, China’s ranking slumped due to a zero-tolerance approach to dealing with the pandemic. But slowing society back to a normal way of life.

In contrast to China, Southeast Asian countries even experienced an increase in ranking. One of them was Indonesia, which beat other Southeast Asian countries, and rose from position 92 to position 54.

This means that Indonesia’s ranking rose 38 compared to the previous. This is the highest compared to other countries in the region.

Meanwhile, Malaysia rose to 102nd position from the previous 115th position. Unfortunately, however, the last two places are still occupied by other Southeast Asian countries, namely the Philippines and Laos, while Vietnam is fourth from the bottom.

Then Singapore dropped its ranking from 56 previously, to rank 70 or equivalent to the United States (US) and slightly behind the UK. The country is battling an exponential rise in infections but has not abandoned its plans to coexist with the virus.

As many as 98% of new patients in Singapore are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. But the pandemic continues to raise questions about the long-term viability of Singapore’s economy.

In the Philippines daily new cases are starting to fall, but the number of complete vaccinations is still less than 30% of the population. This number is low even among ASEAN countries.

The government last month conducted a trial of a ‘granular’ lockdown in Metro Manila. The government is gradually easing business restrictions to revive the economy.

Meanwhile, Vietnam was the worst performer in the previous two rankings. But now the country receives a full score of 10 in the ‘new vaccine’ subcategory, meaning it is among the top 10% of countries delivering the most daily doses of vaccine per capita.
