Attracting volunteer actors, including from the ranks of the bodyguards, a documentary short film about the battle of Latvian riflemen on the banks of the Daugava near Ogre on October 18, 1916 was made in Ogre. Although the riflemen did not win at that time due to the coincidence of different circumstances, the battle was one of the stages on the way to a free Latvia.
In 2008, a memorial stone was unveiled at the mouth of the Ogre River in the Daugava for the battle that took place here on the banks of the Daugava on October 18, 1916, with the participation of the reconnaissance of the Second Riga Latvian Rifle Battalion. Although this is not highlighted as one of the most significant battles in the pages of history, the director of the documentary short film “Ogre. Riflemen. Daugava” currently coming to Ogre emphasizes that each battle is significant in the war and opens a new page in history.
“We took a few days specifically around this battle to create a bit of an atmosphere like what was here. Well, and then specifically this intelligence operation, when they were tasked with going to the other bank of the Daugava, where there were Germans, and taking a German captive to find out. , which they are preparing there, “said the director.
One of the biggest challenges has been finding an old wooden fishing boat with which riflemen crossed the Daugava. The cultural heritage center “Tīnūžu muiža”, where an exposition about Latvian riflemen was created, helped to provide costumes and requisites for the restoration of the specific time. The director mentions volunteers as the biggest benefit of the film. 15 volunteer actors, including from the 54th Engineering Battalion of the National Guard, have taken on the roles of soldiers.
“We all know history, we know how Latvia went on its long road to independence. We wanted to really feel those riflemen, so to speak,” said Alexei Rudoy, a volunteer actor at the National Guard’s 54th Engineering Battalion, about the choice to be in the film.
“This project is unique in that it rarely comes across as much human enthusiasm as it was in this project. In a way, such a small blizzard of souls came to us here,” said director Kaijak.
“My brother is a professional actor, he starred in” Souls of Souls. “He was German in that film. And I also had the opportunity to live a living history and film a film about Latvian riflemen, and I was on the Latvian side. , “laughed Jānis Iklāvs, the head of the Ogresgala 5th Scout and Waiting Unit, a volunteer actor.
Currently, the filming process is over and short film editing works are underway.
“Since we didn’t know how the torchlight procession would work – whether it would happen or not, we decided this year to screen the story of what the torchlight procession is about. We will also use it as teaching material for schools,” he said.
Elīna Aupe, acting director of Ogre Region Culture Center.
The documentary short film “Ogre. Riflemen. Daugava” is planned to be shown on November 11 on the facade of the Ogre municipality building. The short film is made with the support of the municipality and the Ogre Region Culture Center.
