During an interview with Parisian, the international opener of Racing 92, François Trinh-Duc (33 years old; 66 selections) first confided in his return to competition, last weekend during the victory at Brive (20-44), after a third consecutive fracture of the right forearm contracted last August, before evoking his Vietnamese paternal roots.
“There was mockery, racism”
The former player of Toulon and Montpellier admits in particular to have suffered from racism because of its Asian origins and name.
For my uncles, aunts, father, it was difficult, he explains. There was mockery, racism. On my small scale, I suffered a little too.
Recall that in March 2017, François Trinh-Duc had participated in a campaign denouncing the stereotypes and stereotypes of the Asian community in France, alongside PSG goalkeeper Alphone Aréola (on loan to Real Madrid this season).
He left in the footsteps of his ancestors
In search of identity, Trinh-Duc left in the footsteps of his Vietnamese grandfather, as part of the Canal + Interior Sport program, where he discovered a country that was almost unknown to him.

My roots and my Vietnamese name didn’t necessarily have any meaning, concedes the interested party. It was important, enriching and strong to discover a country, especially the village of my grandfather. He had not passed on to us what he had known there and did not discuss it with his family. It was important to create this link.

On the return from this trip, he also wanted to get involved to develop rugby in Vietnam. He thus linked the French Rugby Federation with the Asian Rugby, to create a vietnamese rugby federation. “I will also continue to do associations because I have met fabulous, warm children who live in complicated conditions.”
