As soon as the sun sets tonight, Earth’s natural satellites will appear larger than usual on the horizon and span a shorter distance from our planet. This so-called ‘supermoon’ phenomenon will be the first of four series in the coming months.

This evening March 28th, a supermoon will offer a beautiful spectacle for mankind. This phenomenon occurs when the full moon coincides with when our natural satellite is moving closest to the earth, at a distance of 356,700 kilometers. This is the perigee.

Therefore, around 9:00 pm (Paris time) the supermoon looks best on the east side.

In comparison, when the moon is at its peak, it is 406,300 kilometers from the blue planet.

Therefore, around 8:00 pm supermoon will be seen on the east side at its best.

In total, scientists are talking about the four super moons that will occur this year. The next one will take place on April 27, while the other two will take place on May 26 and June 24.

The origin of the term

In the 1970s the term super moon was introduced by astrologer Richard Nolle. This expression is not considered a scientific term, but is widely used by the media.

In addition, there is another, more poetic expression to refer to this astronomical phenomenon: the super-snow moon. According to NASA, it was donated to our satellite by Native American tribes in the United States on the second full moon of winter.
