Tom Waes Unveils New Sailing Yacht in Friesland, Holland: Bestevaer 53 Details Revealed

Tom Waes got to know what his new sailing yacht will be like for the first time in Friesland, Holland. In the hangar, everyone is working hard to ensure the Bestevaer 53 sails safely across the seven seas, but Waes himself had the honor of attaching the boat’s build number .

“Number 113”, Waes shows his number with a smile as the final touches are put to the welding job. “These are the first three meters of the boat and it should be about that. ” By ‘that’ Waes means a boat that is much further in development.

Outside, Waes shows us a finished copy. “This is going to happen em“, he laughs. “I know the person lying here from photos and videos. But when you get here and see how big it is… crazy. “

An ecological story

The Bestevaer 53 with which Waes wants to travel around the world is 16 meters long, 4.6 meters wide and is specially made for navigation in cold weather and through ice. “The most important thing is for her to be as ecological a boat as possible,” the TV producer said earlier this year. “Seventy percent of the aluminum used will be recycled. We want to use electric motors instead of diesel engines. The ship will be powered by solar panels. It must also have an emergency generator, so it will be a hybrid ship. You can’t ignore that, otherwise your range is too small to sail on oceans.”

“A boat like this gives opportunities to create all kinds of programs. We haven’t decided yet what they will be. There are so many ideas,” Waes said. “We can tell an ecological story with it, we can follow in the footsteps of Belgian explorers, you name it. Navigating Waes option, but not sure yet. The first step is to raise the boat.”

From Antwerp to Antarctica

What Waes knows is where he wants to sail. “We want to see the world and show it to the people. Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands… all places that are not visited by many people and we want to show them how beautiful our world is and see if we can keep it that way.”

And as in many of his programs, Waes also pilots the yacht himself. He says he is already working on this at the Galgenweel in Antwerp with a smaller, optimistic version. Although all beginnings are difficult for Waes too. “I’m really learning the first things now, but all I do is go over it, fall over and sail in the wrong direction. Anyway, within 16 months I’ll have the keys and I’ll have to get on the water,” he laughs.
