Cedar pollen is at its peak in a wide area from Kyushu to Tohoku. In addition to cedars, cypress trees have also begun to fly in earnest, and yesterday, on the 13th, a “very large” amount of cypress pollen was observed in Tokyo. The weekend is expected to be sunny and warmer than expected for the season, causing large amounts of pollen to be dispersed widely. If you have hay fever, take all possible precautions. How long will the peak last?

Cedar pollen scattering peak: Cypress trees are in full swing in Kyushu

For people with hay fever, this can be said to be the most difficult season.
Cedar pollen is at its peak in a wide area from Kyushu to Tohoku. In addition to cedar pollen, cypress pollen is also starting to fly, although the amount is still small in many places from Kyushu to Kanto.

According to information from the Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Care Bureau, cypresses began scattering in Tama on Friday, February 23rd, and yesterday, Wednesday the 13th, there were 50.6 cypress trees per square centimeter in Tama. We observed a “very large” amount of cypress pollen. Hinoki cypress pollen is starting to pick up in some places, such as Kyushu, and the peak season is approaching in the Kanto region as well.

Temperatures will rise on the weekend, around 20 degrees Celsius in Kyushu and Kanto, and pollen is “very high”

The weekend is expected to be largely sunny. Temperatures will also rise further, reaching around 20 degrees Celsius from Kyushu to Kanto, making it warmer than the rest of the season.

From tomorrow, the 15th (Friday) to the 16th (Saturday), pollen is expected to be “extremely high” in various areas from Kyushu to southern Tohoku. It is expected that a large amount of pollen will be scattered, so if you have hay fever, please take all possible precautions when going out.
On the 17th (Sunday), it will gradually rain from Kyushu to Kinki, and it looks like the scattering of pollen will calm down for a while. However, the Tokai and Kanto regions are expected to continue experiencing “very high numbers” into next week. Tohoku will also be flying “a lot”.

In addition to cedar, the peak season for cypress is approaching

It’s almost the end of March, but there will still be days when people with hay fever will need to take thorough measures.
The peak of cedar pollen is expected to be around mid-March in Shikoku, Kinki, Tokai, and Hokuriku regions, and towards the end of March in Kanto and southern Tohoku. With patience for about two more weeks, the amount of cedar pollen scattered will gradually decrease.

However, the peak period of cypress pollen is approaching. Cypress pollen is expected to reach its peak in Kyushu from now until early April, and in Chugoku, Shikoku, Kinki, and Kanto as early as next week, and is expected to reach its peak from early to mid-April.

Many people who have a reaction to cedar also have a reaction to cypress, so please be careful about pollen from around mid-April.

Pollen countermeasures when going out

To alleviate the symptoms of hay fever, it is important to avoid pollen. Wear a mask and glasses, and dress wisely.

① Glasses
Experiments have shown that the amount of pollen entering the eyes is reduced by approximately 40% compared to when not wearing glasses, and by approximately 65% when using glasses for hay fever with protective covers.

② Mask
I think many people use it to prevent infectious diseases, but it can also reduce the amount of pollen you inhale by about one-third to one-sixth. It is important to choose a mask that fits your face. It is also known that applying gauze to the inside of the mask (inner mask) further reduces the amount of pollen entering the nose.

③ Ideas for clothing
In general, clothing made of wool attracts pollen more easily than cotton or synthetic fibers, making it easier to carry pollen indoors. Wool attracts pollen about 10 times more easily than cotton. When going out, avoid wearing woolen clothing on the outside and choose jackets made of smooth material.
