Today marks the Day of Remembrance of the National Resistance Movement

Today, for the first time, the National Resistance Movement Day will be officially celebrated.

This day of remembrance was included in the Law “On Holidays, Remembrance and Celebrations” only last year.

March 17 has been designated as a day of remembrance for the National Resistance Movement, as on this day the Central Council of Latvia, led by Konstantin Chakste, completed the collection of signatures in 1944 demanding the effective restoration of Latvia’s independence on behalf of the Latvian people.

Memorial Day will be honored and commemorated by all members of the national resistance movement.

A number of events are planned today to commemorate the resistance.

Today, two events organized by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports of the Riga City Council in honor of the signatories of the Memorandum of the Central Council of Latvia will take place in Riga.

At 3.30 pm, a short documentary “Konstantin” by Latvian director Dzintra Geka-Vaska dedicated to the head of the Latvian Central Council and Professor Konstantin Cakste will be shown in the Small Hall of the cinema “Splendid Palace”.

Admission to the event will be free upon presentation of a valid Covid-19 vaccination or disease certificate and the use of a medical face mask or FFP-2 respirator.

To attend the event, you must withdraw your free ticket at the box office of the Splendid Palace cinema or electronically on the website “https://www.splendidpalace.lv/lv/movie-ticket-booking/2102″.

At 18:00, a memorial service will take place at the Freedom Monument, asking those present to light and put out candles in honor of the signatories of the memorandum of the Central Council of Latvia.

The lighting of candles on this day has become a tradition started by the initiative group of the Latvian Central Council Memorial Fund in 2014. The Riga Chamber Choir “Ave Sol” will perform at the memorial event.
