To be safe, Chinese citizens in Ukraine are asked to put a flag on their vehicles

KIEV – Embassy China in Kiev told its citizens at Ukraine to stay at home or at least take the precaution of displaying the Chinese flag on their vehicles in case they need to drive anywhere, following the Russian attack on the country.

“The Chinese flag can be affixed in a clear place on the vehicle body,” the Chinese Embassy said in its advisory, as quoted by Reuters, Friday (2/25/2022).

The strategy to show identity on vehicles has been carried out by China in conflicts in other parts of the world. During Lebanon’s military conflict with Israel in 2006, Chinese diplomatic personnel and their families fleeing the embassy in Beirut had covered their vehicles with the Chinese national flag to avoid being targeted at random.

China has so far not told its citizens to consider leaving Ukraine. The security advisory issued by the embassy earlier this week had warned Chinese nationals to stock up on daily necessities such as food and water.

So far, China is known as a supporter of Russia. Especially for the conflict in Ukraine, China believes Russia can solve the existing problems. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Russia was able to handle the situation in Ukraine on its own and did not need Chinese military support.

Russia is a great power with strength. It doesn’t need support from China or any other country,” he said at the briefing, answering an appropriate question from a Western journalist, as quoted by TASS.

The Chinese diplomat noted that Beijing’s position on the issue differs from that of American leaders. “We will not act like the United States, which supplies large quantities of weapons to Ukraine,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on Thursday morning that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republic, he had made the decision to carry out a special military operation to protect people “who have suffered abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years. .”

While clarifying the ongoing developments, the Russian Ministry of Defense assured that Russian troops were not targeting Ukrainian cities, but were limited to surgically attacking and crippling Ukrainian military infrastructure. There is no threat whatsoever to the civilian population.
