Tips for Maintaining Osteoporosis-Free Bone Health by Vice President Ma’ruf Amin

Jakarta

Osteoporosis It is often associated with the disease of the elderly, especially women who have gone through menopause. In fact, osteoporosis can also attack the productive age.

The Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia said the same thing Ma’ruf Amin who was present virtually at the launching of the movement against National Osteoporosis in Ancol, North Jakarta, Saturday (23/10/2021).

“Osteoporosis is a disease that not only affects the majority of postmenopausal women. However, it can affect anyone, not only the elderly, but also the young age group,” said Ma’ruf.

Quoted from Mayo ClinicOsteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle to the point that they are so fragile that a fall or even mild pressure such as bending over or coughing can cause fractures. Osteoporosis-related fractures or fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

When you are young, your body can produce new bone faster than it can break down old bone, and your bone mass will also increase. After their early 20s, this process slows down, and most people reach peak bone mass by age 30. With age, bone mass is lost faster than it is formed.

How likely a person is to develop osteoporosis depends on how much bone mass he had in his youth. Therefore, prevention efforts at a young age are very important to prevent the risk of developing osteoporosis in old age.

Especially during the pandemic, people’s activities outside are limited so that without realizing it, someone rarely moves. This can increase the risk of osteoporosis as stated by Ma’ruf Amin, the risk of osteoporosis is as follows.

“The lack of public activity outside the room is lazy to move and lacks physical activity,” said Ma’ruf Amin.

“Especially during this pandemic, where most of the patterns of working, studying or doing activities online from home create opportunities for osteoporosis,” he continued.

Therefore, it is important to prevent osteoporosis. One of them is by implementing the healthy living community movement.

“By maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity, not consuming alcohol, not smoking, consuming balanced nutrition, especially those containing high calcium and vitamin D and early detection to maintain bone health,” he said.

The goal is not only to prevent osteoporosis but also for a more productive future.
