“Tiny Houses” in Los Angeles: Colorful mini hope for the homeless

Clean, safe and a roof over your head

It is a colorful symbol of hope for people who would otherwise live on the streets. 39 colored, small prefabricated houses, so-called “tiny houses”, have recently been erected in a new housing estate in the US metropolis of Los Angeles in the US state of California. They are temporarily home to homeless people who, due to natural disasters or personal problems, have no roof over their heads.

The mini-houses offer their residents a safe place for the moment, which is clean, equipped with the essentials and reasonably comfortable. “They know that this is not the ultimate goal, but that it is a temporary shelter,” says Ken Craft, spokesman for the aid organization “Hope of the Valley” (translated: Hope for the Valley).

Even if the residents know that they only have a temporary home here, they are happy and grateful. “It’s like a godsend,” says Amy Singer. “It really is the best thing that has happened to us in a long, long time,” said the 48-year-old, who moved into one of the houses with her partner John Golka and the dog Smalls.

California’s homeless crisis deepens

Unlike conventional houses, they are easy to manufacture and set up in minutes. It takes just half an hour for a tiny house from the Pallet company in Washington to be ready for occupancy. The houses are six square meters in size, with windows, two beds, shelves and air conditioning. The settlement includes mobile toilets and showers. Washing machines and dryers are also available.

The small settlement of Chandler Street in North Hollywood was built in response to the worsening homeless crisis in the greater Los Angeles area, reports US media. Last year, 66,4000 homeless people are said to have been registered there. In the entire state of California, more than 150,000 people are without permanent housing.

Other California cities such as San Jose and Sacramento are also increasingly discovering the mini-houses as an affordable option for housing the homeless, according to the US media. Nationwide, they would also be used in Seattle, Minneapolis and Des Moines (Iowa).
